Westwood Academics

Our Priority

At Westwood, our top priority is academics. We use research based best practices such as cooperative learning, authentic assessment, and differentiated instruction and have become well known in this area.

At Westwood, you can expect an excellent classical education in math, reading, science, and history. Additionally, languages begin in the K3 program through the eleventh grade.

International Recognition

Within the past several years , we have had three international film crews come to document the practices at Westwood for use in training programs for other teachers in our Math, English, Technology, and Learning Lab areas of the school.

Additionally, our internationally recognized Learning Lab works with students through the ninth grade on enrichment and strengthening skills. The Search and Teach program used in conjuction with classroom methods ensures that all of our students are reading early in their K5 school year.

Our Technology program has won many international awards including the best online learning project in the world from the International Society of Technology Educators and the Taking IT Global Learning Award for the Flat Classroom project, and the Edublog Award for best Wiki in Education for 2006 and 2008. and inclusion in best selling books such as Thomas Friedman's book The World is Flat and Don Tapscott's book Grown Up Digital. This program has been mentioned in the Boston Globe, the Wall Street Journal, the George Lucas Foundation's Edutopia in 2008 and 2009, and has been in many other magazines, newspapers and periodicals. Each year, select students attend the Flat Classroom conference and have traveled to such places as Doha, Qatar and Mumbai, India.

Excellence at All Levels

Literary programs, argumentative essay, and debate, voice, and drama teams are continually competing and winning at the state championship level. Athletic programs such as our track and tennis programs continue to dominate state and regional competitions. Many activities such as Drama Club, Student Government, Y-Club, 4-H, FCA, and National Honor Society are available to help students develop their leadership prowess, presentation skills, and a service mindset.

Excellence is part of what we do at Westwood as is the desire to help every child find their strengths. Westwood students tend to be well rounded students who are well educated, service minded, and able to work with leading technology tools with people from many cultures.
