Westwood Middle School

Grades 4-6

A Team of Professionals

The middle school is taught by a team of fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade teachers. They coordinate curriculum and activities to work as a unit. They have a unique understanding of the needs of this age group and how to challenge and encourage their best growth.

A Step Up Academically

Students step up from primary school into a more demanding curriculum with more critical thinking and independent study. The reading curriculum continues with emphasis on comprehension, critical thinking, and reader response. Accelerated Reader is a supplementary reading program for all the grades. The study of English builds with emphasis on writing, editing, and understanding language. The math goes beyond the four basic operations into fractions, decimals, percentages, and equations. Social studies and science become more project based and more relevant.

Hands On Learning

At Westwood, we work to make learning meaningful through hands-on learning experiences.

Experience Space

The fourth grade makes an annual trip to the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. For three days students have a have a firsthand look at the space program.

Hands on Ecology

The fifth and sixth grades travel every other year to the Jekyll Island Environmental Educational Center for a three-day hands-on ecology study.

Immersive Experiences

Students spend a day working at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture, work on a weather unit with the WALB-TV meteorologists, and visit the Mariana Caverns.

Physical Education

Middle school students have physical education every day.

Each week middle school students learn spanish and music.

Fifth and sixth grade students are taught keyboarding. All students have hands-on experiences in the computer lab during the school year.

Students have the opportunity to take art, gymnastics, piano, and tennis lessons on campus for a fee.

Extra Curricular

Older students can participate in team basketball, cross country, softball, football and track. They can also choose to be part of the Middle School Quiz Bowl team that competes in organized Quiz Bowl Competitions.

What Our Parents Are Saying

Don’t just take it from us, let our customers do the talking!

Westwood offers our children a safe, loving, and encouraging learning environment where our kids are challenged academically. We are proud to be a part of a family-oriented school where values are a priority.

Meredith Powell

Westwood is more than just a school, it is a family. The school's size, together with its values, standards, and excellent academics are the reasons we choose Westwood for our girls.  Westwood focuses on developing a well-rounded student. Not only is a quality education important, but involvement in extra-curricular and the community is emphasized as well.

Amanda Hobbs

I wouldn't send my children anywhere else!  In addition to excellent academics, all three of my children have been able to be an integral part of many different school activities (sports teams, clubs, performing arts) without having to concentrate, or specialize in just one area.
