Junior High School

Junior High provides an important transition between middle and high schools. The Westwood program is designed to foster the continued academic progress of students and to aid in the spiritual and social development. Our highly qualified staff is aware of the unique needs of developing adolescents and the best instructional methods to teach them.

Learning Lab

Students’ individual needs are addressed by one class each day in the Learning Lab. While in the Learning Lab, students work on individual skills  and also have study hall time in a small group with an assigned lab tutor.

Technology

Eight grade students have a semester of intensive keyboarding in preparation for computer science the following year.

Math Skills

The math rounds out a mastery of basic math and its operations. The eighth grade introduces pre-algebra or Algebra I for those who take the Honors Math track.

Sports

The Junior High also has football, cross country, softball, baseball, girls’ and boy’s basketball, and track teams,

English and Language Arts

English is dedicated to a solid understanding of grammar and how it applies to the writing process. The writing process develops into the essay form. The SAT vocabulary program and Daily Grammar Practice (DGP) have been vertically extended into these grades.

Enrichment

Junior High Students have daily PE, optional music, weekly Spanish, and the opportunity to be a member of the Junior High Quiz Bowl Team or Middle School Spelling Bee Team.

Experiences in the Modern World

Westwood is a school that likes hands-on real-world experiences. Here are just a few.

The Junior High School travels to Washington, DC every two years. As students travel, they collect memorobilia, take photos, and gather information about our nation’s history.

Upon return, students compile a comprehensive scrapbook about their adventures.
